Foursquare has created explicit associations between national and local brands and their brick-and-mortar locations. Users can query the Places dataset explicitly by chain name or chain ID to obtain a list of stores representing that chain. Examples include Starbucks, Walgreens, and 7-Eleven.

NOTE: Related holding companies and corporate entities are not included. There is no hard-and-fast definition of a chain; it may be privately held local chain with only a few stores, or a publicly held national brand with thousands of locations.

There are two chain-related attributes in Foursquare's core attribute set:

  • Chain Name
    • Label indicating which chain(s) (brand or franchise) this POI is a member of
  • Chain ID
    • Unique ID indicating which chain(s) (brand or franchise) this POI is a member of
